“I shop therefore I am” Barbara Kruger 1987, a seminal piece of work. I feel that shopping has become, and maybe always was, more that just a pastime, but Im not sure what.

My paintings reflect on the choices, or lack of them, the decisions to be made and seductions proffered to us, from magazines to catalogues, to quench an insatiable desire to acquire the objects we lack and think we need. Many are realising that the power of consumption is stopping us from finding true and sincere happiness and that shopping often works as a substitute for something that we’re missing in life.

Therefore the subject of shopping crosses over with the Perfect Life series and much of my work. The images offer us that which we desire but cannot obtain; the beautiful pair of shoes, the lovely lunch with elegant friends, together with a happy family and a gorgeous dress, with lovely hair and perfect make up.
